NOTE: Several individual alumni associations in various communities have published Web or www pages. The National Fraternity encourages alumni to experiment with Internet publishing as a way to increase communication among members and present the association to potential members. However, these association pages are not monitored or controlled by, nor do they in any way constitute official content of the National Fraternity. Rather, they represent the views, opinions and activities of the individual association and page author. Comments and suggestions may be sent by e-mail or by phone to the Executive Offices staff at webmaster@phikappatau.org or (513) 523-4193.

Honorary Initiation

In 1990, Ralph Cupelli was a colonel in the U.S. Army, stationed as the head of the ROTC program at Truman State University. A career military man in his 40s, Cupelli had little experience with Greek organizations, but met several Phi Kappa Tau students through ROTC.

He became interested in the Fraternity and its commitment to developing leaders on campus and in the community. Eventually, a few Phi Taus asked Cupelli if he would serve as an advisor to the Delta Omega chapter.

Once involved, Cupelli soon realized that the values and ideals that he lived by were in concert with the Fraternity's mission and creed. He became more linked to the Fraternity and the members became more linked to him, so he was approached to consider honorary membership in Phi Kappa Tau.

Cupelli was initiated in January of 1994 and has routinely attended chapter events and initiations since becoming a member. He has also received the Phi Kappa Tau Edgar Ewing Brandon Award, reserved for the most outstanding chapter advisor in Phi Kappa Tau.

Phi Kappa Tau is committed to recognizing those men of character who did not have an undergraduate experience in a fraternity. Our mark of distinction need not only apply to undergraduates. Throughout our history, we have invited hundreds of worthy men into our circle whose undergraduate days were only distant memories–fathers, sons, co-workers, colleagues, and friends.

Men who recognize and align themselves with the principles, values and mission of Phi Kappa Tau, and who are not already members of another general college fraternity, may be honorary initiated into the Fraternity.

According to the National Constitution of Phi Kappa Tau, "Any male not otherwise eligible for Resident or Graduate membership who through membership in Phi Kappa Tau shall bring to it honor and credit may be nominated to become an honorary graduate member of Phi Kappa Tau."
