NOTE: Several individual undergraduate chapters at colleges and universities have published Web or www pages. The National Fraternity encourages chapters to experiment with Internet publishing as a way to increase communication among members and present the chapter to potential members. However, these chapter pages are not monitored or controlled by, nor do they in any way constitute official content of the National Fraternity. Rather, they represent the views, opinions and activities of the individual chapter and page author. Comments and suggestions may be sent by e-mail or by phone to the Executive Offices staff at webmaster@phikappatau.org or (513) 523-4193.

Borradaile Challenge

The Borradaile Challenge is a standards program within the Fraternity wherein criteria indicate a quality Phi Kappa Tau undergraduate experience.

Adopted as an overall code of practice by the 56th National Convention (St. Louis 2004), the Borradaile Challenge emphasizes a series of standards including membership, recruitment, membership orientation, bylaws, Ritual and regalia, scholarship, finance, philanthropy, community service, risk management, national participation, alumni relations, Board of Governors and required reports.

Chapters with Maxwell status excel at the highest level within the Fraternity and are eligible for the Roland Maxwell Outstanding Chapter of the Year award.

Order of the Star is achieved when all 14 standards criteria are met at the Basic level or above. For a chapter to achieve Basic level, at least 11 of the 14 standards criteria must be met at the Basic level or above.

Chapters that do not meet Basic expectations in a given area are assisted by national and local officers. Chapters that do not achieve at least 11 of the standards at Basic level are put on Standards Probation for one year. Chapters that remain on Standards Probation for two years are considered Show Cause and active status is voted upon during biennial Convention.

The Borradaile Challenge provides the structure for a valuable Phi Kappa Tau chapter experience. As the program evolves, the three original goals remain paramount to volunteers and the chapter services staff: clearly communicate Phi Kappa Tau standards, assist chapters in meeting standards, and document and share chapter performance.

Membership Orientation

Membership Orientation is a six to eight week process designed to familiarize associate members with Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity (many other fraternities use the more common term of "pledge;" however, we do not officially recognize that reference).

The expectations of membership are outlined in a hazing-free environment that provides structure for building brotherhood in a positive, productive manner.

Each week, a portion of the Phi Kappa Tau Creed is dissected and discussed with associate members. Through educational programming the Creed is linked to Fraternity history and explains the values of the national organization and local chapter.
