June 14th, 2018: Oxford, Ohio – On June 12th, Dr. Ewing Thomas Boles Jr., William & Mary, ’39, son of Honorary Founder Ewing T. Boles, entered the Chapter Eternal.

Dr. Ewing Thomas Boles Jr. was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1921. He attended Upper Arlington High School and then later Ohio State, before transferring to William and Mary College where he graduated in 1942. At William and Mary he was on the swim team, editor of the yearbook, and joined Phi Kappa Tau.

After his undergraduate, Dr. Ewing Thomas Boles Jr. attended Harvard Medical School where he received his MD, cum lade, and did his surgical internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City. Upon completing his internship, he served in the United States Army Medical Corps for two years in Japan, from 1946-1948. In 1948 he returned to New York to finish his residency at St. Luke’s and later Ohio State, where he became interested in Pediatric Surgery.

Dr. Ewing Thomas Boles Jr. later accepted a position at Children’s Hospital as a Pediatric Surgeon, where he was eventually appointed Chief and Associate Medical Director for the Department of Pediatric Surgery. He held these positions until his retirement in 1991. He was also the director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University for 19 years.

Dr. Ewing Thomas Boles Jr. enjoyed skiing, bicycling, golf, sailing, and bridge. He is succeeded by his four children, Katherine Smith, Robert Boles, Janice Boles, and Stephen Boles.

Rather than flowers, the family suggests making a charitable donation in Dr. Boles name to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital at P.O. Box 16810, Columbus, Ohio, 43216.
